Can Silence be used as an Effective Tool for Communication ??? In my view, Yes !! Why Not ?? Do share your views / comments !!
There are many ways by which a human being can communicate with the rest of the world….
- Talking
- Writing
- Singing
- Express Emotions with Gestures like Smile, Tears, Anger…
- Silence
As Human beings, we can talk, write, sing, express our emotions with gestures and we can also use Silence. Have you ever realized that Silence, in fact, is the most powerful mode of communication.
We become the most powerful living being when we are silent. Silence should never be taken as a sign of our weakness. It provides us the inner strength to express trust and self-worth. It is from this base of inner strength that our actions evolve. Silence can create wonders, if used strategically and in right manner….
Silence can be used in many ways to convey our :
- Disagreement
- Acceptance
- Dis-pleasure
- Peace
⦁ We convey our Disagreement: Contrary to powerful belief, Silence does not only signify Acceptance but also signifies that you disagree. … Example, When a Manager makes an announcement and the entire team is cheering. If one person is standing in the corner silently with a crooked smile playing on his/her lips, this silence rings louder than all the “n” number of cheers around, and is often viewed as a silent disagreement. It is possible that this person may not be happy with the Managements’ decision; hence chose to be Silent and convey his message of “dis-agreement”
⦁ We convey our Acceptance: This is an idea widely propagated especially by Bollywood movies, wherein various movie scenes, we often see the heroine run inside when a proposal for her marriage is being discussed… and this act is often seen as an agreement to the proposal. Similarly, If someone says to a room full of people, ” Do you see some problem? ” and the audience remains silent, it is understood as to having accepted the proposal.
⦁ To convey our Displeasure: This happens most often in personal relationships. When we are cross / angry with someone, we choose to remain silent. This is especially relevant to couple-relationships. When one person is suddenly silent for some time without any arguments and against his/her nature, the other should guess that the person is angry; time to introspect and see what we could have done, or not done, that could have made our partner angry…
⦁ We try to maintain Peace: At times, we feel it is the best to stay silent, especially during heated arguments, if one partner chooses to remain silent, the angry arguments will not survive for too long…
It is very rightly said: ”If you Speak when you are angry; you will make the best speech that you will ever regret”
As humans, our mind is programmed to respond only when we are asked a question, or even otherwise. .. However, silence used at the right moment is the best communication strategy….IT AVOIDS A LOT OF HEARTACHE AND PROBLEMS.
”Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place but far more still difficult, to leave un-said the wrong thing at the most tempting moment”
Supreme truth can only be contained in silence and not in limited words.
In a state of complete silence, we put our mind in a state of quiescence and it becomes the perfect instrument through which the best of ourselves manifests.
It is a noisy world we live in. People talk loudly on cell phones. Ring tones can be heard in once serene restaurants. Most cars have radios on. Most homes have Television Sets on always. I see people chatting on mobile while eating their meals, which is bad for digestion.
Each of us, I suggest, must find time for what we call Silence, Solitude and Stillness.
At least, find some time (maybe 15 minutes a day) to stay quiet and have a calm mind. The calm mind means Courage so that you may face without fear the truth and difficulties of the path of life. It also means Steadiness, so that you may lighten the troubles which come into your life and avoid the incessant worry over the little things into which many people spend most of their time.
Trust me! This is the best practice which will make you much better at work, at home and most importantly with yourself.
Some Practical Strategies:
⦁ When you are in your car or in a cab, Keep the radio off. Use that time to renew yourself .To observe. To introspect.
⦁ Take 15 minutes before you sleep to immerse yourself in peace or be silent. Just chill. Get comfortable with no noise around. Get comfortable with yourself.
⦁ Take a daily vow of Silence.
These strategies are not just for Monks or elders or people who have renounced the worldly pleasures. It is more for smart Executives, Working Class, College Students, Entrepreneurs and Business people.
Talking takes away a ton of energy. I can’t believe how much some people can talk the whole day long continuously on their mobile – at the water cooler, at the canteen, on stations / bus stops and while commuting towards office or back home. It is exhausting just to watch them talk and talk. …
Try to Be silent atleast for 15 minutes a day….You will have More Energy; More Peace; More Joy – resulting in Better Efficient Performance…
I fully agree! Silence is very powerful!
